Change with the Seasons

The Beach Coast is fortunate to have a handful of microbreweries crafting special brews that reflect the flavors of fall. This story highlights three breweries from across our coast that offer beers to celebrate the season. Sit back, relax and enjoy what the Beach Coast is brewing.
Back Road Brewery
Chuck Krcilek, founder and co-owner of Back Road Brewery in La Porte, IN, started brewing beer in his basement in 1990 as a hobby. Not until the late 90s did he incorporate his business and pair up with business partner Jim Hannon.
Krcilek and Hannon first crafted a Back Road Ale, a Blueberry Ale, and a Belle Gunness Stout. After those became popular, the brew masters continued to add to Back Road's roster, which now includes 53 different beers and ales and the number keeps growing.
"We release our Autumn Ale in September each year, and this fall we have an Imperial English Ale," Krcilek says. "We use almost 500 lbs. of Pale Ale malt and Crystal malt for the dark amber color resulting in a rich, malty, well-balanced beer."
Back Road introduces new beers every season, tweaking recipes to offer its customers something new and exciting throughout the year. The brewery offers free tours every Saturday afternoon and many retailers and bars along the Beach Coast have bottles for sale or Back Road beers on draft.
Hops impart distinctive flavors to Beach Coast brews
Shoreline Brewery
Dave Strupeck and his son Sam opened Shoreline Brewery in Michigan City, IN, in August of 2005. Since then, it has become a powerhouse on The Beach Coast brewing scene. Turning a pre-Civil War lumberyard building into a brewery, the father-son team has worked hard for the last five years bringing quality beers to their side of the Beach Coast.
To celebrate fall, Shoreline will be offering Oktoberfest beer and food specials the second weekend in October, charging $2 for pints of beer to highlight the release of its Oktoberfest Lager.
"The beers are getting darker as the days begin to get darker," Sam Strupeck says. "We are releasing new beers every month.
In November, Shoreline will feature its Region Rat Red Ale followed, in December, by its Schwarzbier (German for "black beer"). As the colder weather descends on The Beach Coast, head over to Shoreline and order a dark beer to lighten your spirits.
To experience Shoreline beers as well as some live entertainment, the brewery offers beer specials several nights a week and open mic nights. In addition, they bring in popular local and regional bands, which always draw crowds of Beach Coast residents for whom great beer and great music are a winning combo.
Round Barn Tasting Room, Baroda, MI
Round Barn Brewery
Opened in 1992 by former high school biology teacher, Rick Moersch, Round Barn Winery, Distillery & Brewery in Baroda, MI, has become a popular Beach Coast destination for beer and wine lovers from all over the Midwest. Along with his two sons, Matthew and Christian, Rick has expanded Round Barn to include three beer and wine tasting rooms in Baroda, Union Pier, and Saugatuck.
"Round Barn Brewery has one fall seasonal beer on tap, the Harvest Ale," brewer Matthew Moersch says. "It's a twist on a bold American Pale Ale emphasizing hop flavor and aroma over bitterness making it well rounded and balanced."
A fun way to experience Round Barn beers would be to visit its booth at the Weko Beach Brewers' Festival on October 2 in Bridgman, Michigan. Along with other Michigan craft beer producers, Round Barn staffers will be serving up their award-winning brews to eager Beach Coast beer enthusiasts. Or take a lovely fall outing to the Baroda location where every Saturday afternoon there's live music outside the beer barn to enhance the beer (or wine or vodka) tasting experience. Be sure to check out our Taste section, where you'll find several recipes provided by Round Barn.
Take Three and See
Back Road, Shoreline and Round Barn are close enough together that you could easily plan a great trip to all three. If you haven't been to any (or all) of these great local breweries, you're in for a treat. Head out to these locations to experience, first-hand, the beauty of Beach Coast brewing.
