Live Music and Libations at the Weko Beach Brewers Festival

By K. Schwarz - BlueStarHighway.com | October 4, 2010

Eleven of Michigan's best breweries gathered together on Saturday, October 2 at Weko Beach in Bridgman to host the Weko Beach Brewers Festival, a harvest party showcasing the best craft beers of the season and featuring live musicians.

Brewing companies offering libations at the Weko Beach event included Arcadia, Jolly Pumpkin, Round Barn, Bells, Founders, The Livery, North Peak, New Holland, Old Hat, Saugatuck, and Shorts.

"A lot of the breweries underestimated this area," said Jason Matlock, Round Barn's brewmaster and flavor connoisseur, as several other breweries found themselves short of their most popular brews by mid-afternoon.

One beer that did (unfortunately) run out early was Jolly Pumpkin's La Parcella, one of their most popular choices at the Weko Beach festival. Other favorite brews at the event were Saugatuck's Singapore IPA, Round Barn's Kolsch, Founder's Dirty Bastard, and Shorts' Huma-Lupa-Licious.

When I asked Rachel Rochefort, of Baroda, Michigan, what she was drinking, she pointed me in the direction of Shorts Brewing Company's Soft Parade. Described as "liquefied laughter from fruit filled disaster," Soft Parade was made for those who favor wine or spumante over beer, with an abundance of berry flavors and a deceptive 9% alcohol content.

Two other festival goers, Andrew Daniel and Jacob Smith, said they especially enjoyed Saugatuck's Pier Cove Porter and The Livery's 5th Anniversary Ale.

Of course, where there's good beer, there better be good music. The music tent was packed with people dancing and mingling as The Top Secret band rocked out on stage, covering classic rock tunes that everyone could sing along with. "We're local AND loco!" declared the South Bend band's vocalist, Jetta Cruise.

"Top Secret is by far the best band so far," said Jim Black of Chicago, Illinois. Other performers included electric blues band Duke Tumatoe of Indianapolis, Indiana and KatZcratch of Marshall, Michigan.

Despite the chilly afternoon and the constant threat of rain, even the nasty weather couldn't keep the throngs of Michigan's beer lovers from raising their beer mugs and "toasting the coast" to Michigan's great breweries and award-winning, artisan-crafted beers.
