Vintage Celebration

By Amy Eckert - AAA Travel Agency | March 2010

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS: The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail's wineries offer vineyard tours.
As Michigan's days grow longer and warmer, lakeshore vineyards burst into bloom. It's little wonder the state celebrates Michigan Wine Month in April. Few places mark the season better than the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail.

Lawton Ridge, in Kalamazoo, recently joined the trail. Having grown grapes since 1973, Lawton Ridge opened its own winery and tasting room in 2008, producing varieties from medium-bodied reds to sweet ice wines.

Near the northermost point of the Wine Trail, Fenn Valley celebrates spring with weekend Winemaker's Dinners in March and April. After a tour and barrle samplings, guests sit down to Fenn Valley's five-course dinner, each dish paried with a Pinot Grigio, Riesling or Pinot Noir.

Round Barn Winery in Baroda bottles some of west Michigan's best-loved wines. Winemaker Matthew Moersch happily shares his secrets at winemaking classes each April and May, where participants blen and bottle two cases of their own wine.

The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Festival unites southwest Michigan's vintners and their fans on June 19 in Bridgman. Food vendors and local wineries offer samples at Weko Beach against a backdrop of live music, rolling dunes and shimmering Lake Michigan - the perfect farewell toast to spring. miwinetrail.com, michiganwines.com
