It is interesting to note the wine regions that lay near interstates throughout the country. Interstate 94 runs from east to west along the southern part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Twelve wineries are within minutes of the Interstate between Paw Paw and the Indiana border. This wine region, Lake Michigan Shore, benefits from the influence Lake Michigan has on vineyards close by. Once off the Interstate, travelers will notice fields of corn, Christmas tree farms and rolling hills of vineyards.
Some of the vineyards in the region sell to Welch's and grow Native America grapes such as Concord and Niagara. However there are also many vineyards growing vinifera and hybrids. The number of acres planted with vinifera are slowly increasing. When visiting wineries, expect to taste both dry wines as well as sweet wines. Like most of the country, there are plenty of sweet wine drinkers. Wine tastings will include Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir. There are also other varieties grown such as Muscat, Syrah and Lemberger.

Several wineries are within eight miles of I-94 exit 16. Round Barn Winery offers visitors a unique tasting room in a round barn that was reassembled on the site. Vineyards next to the barn add to the wine country feeling. In addition to a portfolio of wines, one can taste beers and grape vodka.
Tabor Hill Winery is just minutes away. The winery is Michigan's third largest. The vineyards on the property cover 65 acres. Wine travelers can taste white and red wines from dry to sweet. One of the unique wines is a Port made from Cabernet Franc. The winery tasting room is adjacent to a restaurant with two seating areas.
Free Run Cellars has a tasting room and four acres of Pinot Gris. Presently the wines are made at Round Barn Winery. Production at Free Run is kept low at about 1,000 cases and emphasis is placed on small batches of wines. Try the Pinot Rosé made from the Pinot Meunier grape.
Domaine Berrien Cellars produces estate wines from the forty acres of vineyards on-site. A small observation area permits wine travelers to observe the action in the winery below. Just down the road is Lemon Creek Winery. The winery sits on a 152 year-old farm and produces estate wines.
One can visit these wineries within one day. Check the winery website to see if they are open. For more information about wineries in Michigan, visit the
