Dear Friend,

We've been working hard to get our hand-crafted products into the bottle in time for summer. The white wines from 2010 are spectacular as we expected and we are very proud of the all the distilled spirits and beers that are currently available. We've been planting grapes, building parking lots and building a new stage for our free concert series "Jammin' in the Vineyard" starting Memorial Day weekend through October. We've also made some changes to our tastings so be sure to read on.

Cheers!

News from the Round Barn Winery

New Tasting Policy

To reflect changes in Michigan law, increased costs and our continuous goal of providing responsible service & consumption we have implemented new tasting policies. They went into effect May 20th, please take a moment to review them.

Additionally, due to limited space in our beer barns, we will no longer offer beer tastings on Saturday or Sunday at any of our locations. For the enjoyment & better service of everyone, weekend beer sales will be by the glass, half glass and growler. Wine and spirit tastings are still available on the weekends. Thank you for your understanding!

Wine 101 - This month's featured wines

Pinot Gris - Lake Michigan Shore

Pinot Gris originated in Burgundy. It is a pleasant and tasty grape that might remind you of cream and apples. Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are actually the same white grape, with two different names. In Italy, it is known as Grigio, while in France it is known as Gris. Other countries will use the terms interchangeably. Pinot Gris is believed to have mutated from the black Pinot Noir grape and although it is considered a white grape, its skin color is unusually dark for a white variety.

Winemaker's Notes: A wonderful example of Pinot Gris, this wine shows a perfect balance of fruit and mineral tones. Soft and clean on the palate with aromas of apple and lemon the wine finishes with a hint of grapefruit. An ideal wine for summer fare.

Food Pairings: Very versatile with food, especially salads, light appetizers and simply prepared fish and shellfish. Often pairs nicely with similar foods as Chardonnay. View recipes paired with Pinot Gris Wine.

Edel Doux

A Blend of 70% Riesling and 30% Gewürtztraminer. Riesling is one of the world's greatest wine grapes. When properly grown it has great flavor intensity with a wide range of flavors and a wonderfully rich and complex nose. The Riesling grape is believed to be indigenous to Germany, and has been planted there since the fourteenth century. Gewürz means "spicy" in German and this is the main characteristic of Gewürztraminer. A member of the Muscat family with rich, pungent character and flavors, it is full-bodied, low in acid, and slightly oily in texture. Gewürztraminer has an unmistakable trademark in its smell: a mix of roses and lychee fruit, ripe pears, tropical fruit and even sweet spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.

Edel Doux is made in the "late harvest" style, which results in a wine that is very sweet and almost dessert like. Overtones of apricot and peach come through in the finish.

Food Pairings: This wine is a perfect pairing with mild cheeses or dessert, specifically chocolate. Edel Doux also is a great aperitif. View recipes paired with Edel Doux.

From the Cellar

In the Cellar

We've just bottled a new Mirabelle Plum wine that is outstanding. It's a slavic type of Brandy and has quite an elegant flavor. Make sure to give it a try the next time you're in.

Attention Cab and Merlot fans...
We are dangerously low on the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot so get them while you can.

In the Brewery

We've just finished brewing our inaugural batch of "Grape Expectations" -- a Niagra and pink peppercorn infused summer thirst quencher. Look for this new favorite to be available towards the end of June. Much thanks goes out to our Research & BEER-velopment Team who tasted and gave us their feedback, helping us to perfect this new brew.

In the Vineyard

We're planting more vines again this year – 4,000 plants to be exact! Varieties include Albarino, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Pinot Meunier. It took 5 people about 1 week to plant all the plants and weather permitting the new vines will provide a small crop 3 years from now and a full crop in 4 years.

View photos of the planting.
